Commissioned by Alan Gifford to form part of his Masters Degree, the piece is loosely based around the hymn tune ‘Deep Harmony’ by Handel Parker. Handel Parker wrote the hymn whilst living in West Yorkshire in the Worth Valley (Hence the title). The piece also takes inspiration from the likes of Vaughan-Williams and Holst, two of my favorite composers. What I call the ‘English’ style of the two composers seemed to pair up nicely with the original hymn setting itself, whilst being able to add some more modern touches here and there.
It was a pleasure to work with Alan on this project along side 3 other composers, who also had their works premiered at the same event.
Here is a live recording of the piece taken from the concert. Performed by Alan and the Staffordshire Brass Band. Enjoy!
